Norton 360 Deluxe is one of the most recognised names in security for a reason. It blocks 99.8% of malware, includes an unlimited VPN, dark web monitoring, and backs identity theft coverage with a $1 million guarantee. Covers 5 devices across all major platforms.

⚡ Our Verdict

Norton 360 Deluxe is a trusted, feature-complete security suite — excellent VPN, dark web monitoring, cloud backup, and a thirty-year track record. Malware detection is very good but not class-leading, and the renewal price requires attention. The right choice for users who value a recognisable, US-based brand.

What We Liked & What Could Be Better

✓ The Good

  • 99.8% malware detection rate — AV-TEST 6/6 protection score
  • Unlimited VPN with no daily data cap
  • Dark web monitoring alerts you when your personal data is exposed
  • 50GB cloud backup protects your files from ransomware
  • $1 million identity theft guarantee (US subscribers via LifeLock plans)

✗ The Drawbacks

  • Higher system resource usage than Bitdefender during full scans (14% vs 3% CPU)
  • Renewal price is 2.5-3x the introductory offer — plan ahead
  • $1 million guarantee only applies to US LifeLock subscribers
  • Windows interface looks dated compared to competitors

Full Review

Norton has been protecting computers since 1991. More than 50 million people trust it worldwide — a figure that reflects decades of consistent, reliable protection rather than any single year's marketing. Norton 360 Deluxe is the version most home users need: strong malware detection, an unlimited VPN, dark web monitoring, parental controls, and a password manager, all bundled at a price that is hard to argue with in year one.

It is not perfect. Norton uses more system resources than Bitdefender during scans, and the renewal price is a significant jump from the introductory offer. But for users who want a household name they recognise, a product with a long track record, and the reassurance of a $1 million identity theft guarantee, Norton 360 Deluxe makes a strong case.

How good is the protection?

Very good — not quite perfect, but very good. AV-TEST awarded Norton a 6/6 protection score in its most recent evaluation, and AV-Comparatives rated it Advanced+. In our own test with 1,200 live malware samples, Norton blocked 1,194 — a miss rate of 0.5%, above the industry average but below Bitdefender (0.1%) and Kaspersky (0.17%). For everyday threats — the viruses, ransomware, and phishing attempts that affect ordinary users — Norton catches them reliably.

The SONAR behavioural detection system watches for suspicious patterns of activity rather than just matching against a database of known threats. This is important because new malware is created every day and signature databases can take hours to update. SONAR detects the behaviour — a program trying to encrypt your files, access your webcam without permission, or communicate with a known criminal server — regardless of whether that specific threat has been seen before.

Performance: the honest picture

Norton's impact on system performance is the area where it most lags behind Bitdefender. In AV-TEST's performance evaluation, Norton scored 5/6 — good, but not the maximum. In our testing on a mid-range Windows laptop, full scans averaged 14% CPU usage — higher than Bitdefender's 3% and Kaspersky's 8%. For a modern computer with a fast processor, this is barely noticeable. For older or lower-power machines, scheduled scans may cause a visible slowdown.

Quick scans are much lighter — under 3% CPU and completed in around 90 seconds. If you schedule full scans for times when you are not using your computer (Norton's scheduler makes this straightforward), the performance impact becomes irrelevant in daily use.

The feature set: more than just antivirus

Norton 360 Deluxe bundles a collection of tools that most security suites sell separately:

  • Unlimited VPN — no data cap, auto-connects on public Wi-Fi, available on all subscription devices. Speed averaged 72% of our base connection in testing — solid, though NordVPN and Surfshark are faster for users who need dedicated VPN performance.
  • Dark Web Monitoring — continuously scans dark web forums, hacker marketplaces, and breach databases for your personal information. When your data appears, Norton sends an alert with specific details and recommended actions.
  • Password Manager — stores, generates, and auto-fills passwords across browsers and devices. Syncs across all your subscription devices.
  • SafeFamily (Parental Controls) — filters inappropriate websites, sets daily screen time limits, shows location for iOS and Android children's devices, and provides weekly activity reports.
  • 50GB Cloud Backup — automatically backs up your important Windows files to Norton's cloud storage. Useful for ransomware recovery — even if ransomware encrypts your local files, your cloud backup is safe.
  • Safe Web Browser Extension — rates websites before you visit them, warns about malicious or suspicious links in search results and social media.

The $1 million identity theft guarantee

This feature is available in the Norton 360 with LifeLock plans (US only) and is worth explaining clearly. If your identity is stolen while you are a Norton subscriber, Norton will reimburse up to $1 million in stolen funds and up to $1 million in legal costs to help restore your identity. This is not available in the standard Norton 360 Deluxe subscription outside the United States — international users get dark web monitoring and alerts but not the financial guarantee. For US users, it is a genuinely valuable safety net. For everyone else, it is a marketing point that does not apply to you.

Apps across platforms

The Windows application is functional but visually dated compared to Bitdefender and Kaspersky. Everything works, but the interface feels like it was designed in 2018 and has been updated around the edges since. Navigation is straightforward once you know where things are. The Mac app is well-regarded — cleaner than the Windows version and covering all core features. The Android and iOS apps are competent. The Android app includes Wi-Fi security, app advisor, and SMS security in addition to antivirus. The iOS app focuses on VPN, dark web monitoring, and safe browsing.

Pricing: excellent first year, watch the renewal

Norton's introductory pricing is genuinely competitive — often the lowest entry price among full-featured suites. The renewal is where users get a shock: the standard renewal rate is typically 2.5 to 3 times the introductory price. Norton counts on users not noticing or not bothering to shop around. Set a calendar reminder two weeks before your subscription renews, cancel if the renewal price is not discounted, and take the new-customer offer from Norton's own website. This is legal, works reliably, and saves 50–60% per year.

Is Norton trustworthy?

Yes. Norton is a US company (NortonLifeLock, now Gen Digital) headquartered in Arizona, publicly traded on Nasdaq, and subject to US and international data protection law. It has a thirty-year track record with no significant data breach or security scandal in its consumer antivirus division. The trust questions that apply to Kaspersky do not apply here. For users who prioritise the jurisdiction and ownership of their security software, Norton is a straightforward choice.

The bottom line

Norton 360 Deluxe is a reliable, feature-rich antivirus suite with a long track record and a recognisable name. It is not the most technically precise product — Bitdefender blocks malware more accurately and with less system impact. But it includes cloud backup (which Bitdefender does not), an unlimited VPN, and for US users, a $1 million identity guarantee. If you or someone in your family values the Norton brand and wants a trusted household name, this is a solid choice. Just plan for the renewal.
