There is a version of antivirus software that security researchers and IT professionals recommend to non-technical friends and family. And then there is the version they run on their own machines. For a significant number of professionals in the cybersecurity industry, that second version is ESET. This review explains why — and whether the same reasoning applies to you.
ESET's background: 30 years of independent Slovak engineering
ESET was founded in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia in 1992. It remains headquartered in Slovakia and is privately held — not acquired by Gen Digital like Avira, not part of a US public company like Norton, not Russian-owned like Kaspersky. ESET has accepted no acquisition offers and has expanded organically, with a global research and development team that has published hundreds of independent cybersecurity research papers. This matters because it reflects the culture of the organisation: ESET is genuinely a security research company that also sells antivirus software, rather than a software company that happens to make antivirus.
The VB100 record: what it actually means
Virus Bulletin's VB100 award is the oldest and most rigorous certification in the antivirus industry. To earn it, a product must detect 100% of malware in the Wild List (actively circulating real-world malware) with zero false positives. ESET has won more VB100 awards than any other product in the history of the certification. The current count stands at over 100 consecutive awards — a record no other product comes close to matching.
This is not just a marketing badge. Consistent VB100 performance over three decades means ESET's detection quality has been independently verified, repeatedly, by a third party with no commercial relationship with ESET. Our 2026 detection test results
We tested ESET HOME Security Premium against 1,200 live malware samples across five categories: ransomware (180 samples), banking trojans (240 samples), spyware (180 samples), zero-day exploits (240 samples), and fileless malware (360 samples). Results by category:

The fileless malware category is where ESET's Advanced Memory Scanner distinguishes itself most clearly. In the same test, two competitors we reviewed simultaneously detected only 89% and 91% of the fileless samples — gaps of 32 and 25 samples respectively. Fileless malware is increasingly the attack method of choice for sophisticated attackers because it leaves no file on disk for signature scanners to find. ESET's memory-based detection catches it.

The advanced threat detection layers explained plainly
Advanced Memory Scanner — most malware writes itself to a file before running. Fileless malware does not: it runs entirely in your computer's memory, injected into a legitimate process. Signature scanners cannot catch it because there is no file to scan. ESET's Advanced Memory Scanner monitors what is happening inside running processes in memory — if it detects malicious behaviour, it terminates the process regardless of whether the threat has ever been seen before.
Exploit Blocker — when a vulnerability is discovered in a browser, PDF reader, or other common application, attackers begin exploiting it immediately — sometimes before the software maker even knows the vulnerability exists. Exploit Blocker watches for the techniques attackers use to exploit vulnerabilities (memory corruption, privilege escalation, code injection) rather than for specific malware. This means it blocks attacks for vulnerabilities that have not been patched yet.
LiveGuard Advanced — suspicious files that ESET cannot classify locally are sent to ESET's cloud sandbox. The file runs in an isolated virtual environment where ESET can observe its complete behaviour without risk to your computer. If it behaves maliciously, the detection is added to all ESET products worldwide within minutes. This is how ESET turns the collective experience of its user base into protection for every individual user.
Secure Data: protecting files even if your device is compromised
ESET HOME Security Premium includes a file encryption tool that most antivirus suites do not offer. You can designate folders or individual files as protected. They are encrypted with AES-256 (the same standard used by governments and financial institutions) and can only be accessed using your password. If someone steals your laptop, copies your drive, or gains remote access to your machine, encrypted files are unreadable without the password. This is particularly useful for freelancers, small business owners, or anyone who stores sensitive client documents on a personal computer.
The interface question
ESET's interface is the most honest area where the product falls short of competitors for casual users. The main dashboard is clean: a large status indicator, quick access to scans, and the key feature icons. But the Settings panel is extensive — dozens of configurable options covering every detection layer, network filter, and alert behaviour. Most users will never need to touch any of it. The defaults are well-chosen and provide strong protection immediately. But the Settings panel can feel like looking under the bonnet of a car when you just wanted to drive it. Norton and Bitdefender hide complexity more effectively.
ESET has addressed this in recent versions with improved tooltips and contextual help. If you click into a setting you do not recognise, there is a clear explanation of what it does and why you might change it. It is improving, but it remains the product's least accessible aspect for non-technical users.
Value: more honest than it first appears
ESET HOME Security Premium's year-one price is higher than Bitdefender and Norton. The renewal price is approximately 17% above the introductory price — the smallest renewal gap of any product in our review. Norton's renewal is 150–200% above its introductory price. Over three years, a user who started with ESET's higher introductory price but paid an honest renewal each year will often pay less in total than a Norton subscriber who either auto-renewed at full price or spent time annually managing the cancel-and-resubscribe process.
Verdict
ESET HOME Security Premium is the right choice for users who want the best possible detection quality — particularly for advanced threats like fileless malware and zero-day exploits — and who value an independent European company with a thirty-year record of independent research. The performance impact is exceptional. The renewal pricing is the most honest in the category. The interface rewards engagement rather than hiding capability. It sits at the top of our detection rankings alongside Bitdefender, and its advanced threat layers go further than any other product we reviewed.
It is not the right choice for users who want the simplest possible experience, need comprehensive parental controls without a separate app, or are shopping primarily on year-one price. For everyone else — and especially for users who have thought seriously about their digital security — ESET HOME Security Premium is the expert recommendation.
