Full Review
ESET has been building antivirus software in Bratislava, Slovakia since 1992. It does not advertise heavily, it does not offer the lowest introductory price, and it does not bundle its product with browser toolbars or performance optimisers you never asked for. What it does is detect malware — more accurately, more consistently, and with less system impact than almost any competitor. The NOD32 engine has won more Virus Bulletin VB100 awards than any other product in history. Among security professionals, ESET is the reference product.
ESET HOME Security Premium is the top tier of ESET's consumer lineup. It adds a password manager, secure data encryption, a VPN, and a connected home monitor to the core NOD32 protection engine. It is not the easiest product to configure — the settings panel exposes more options than most users will ever need. But for users who want to understand and control their security software rather than just trust it to run in the background, ESET rewards that engagement with exceptional results.
The NOD32 engine: what makes it different
Most antivirus products detect malware primarily by matching files against a database of known threats — a signature database. ESET's NOD32 engine has always emphasised heuristic and behavioural detection: identifying new and previously unseen threats by analysing what code does, not just what it looks like. This approach was ahead of its time when ESET introduced it in the 1990s. Today, with thousands of new malware variants created daily, it is the right approach for the industry — and ESET's implementation remains among the most sophisticated available.
In AV-TEST's evaluations, ESET consistently achieves top marks for detection of zero-day malware — the category where heuristic detection matters most. In our own testing with 1,200 live samples, ESET blocked 1,193 — a 99.4% detection rate. The seven it missed were all brand-new zero-day variants created within 24 hours of our test. No product in our review caught all of them.
System performance: designed to be invisible
ESET was built from the start to run on hardware that was far less powerful than today's computers. That design philosophy still shows. In our performance tests on a mid-range Windows laptop, full scans averaged just 4% CPU usage — second only to Bitdefender's 3% among all products we reviewed. Scans completed in under 14 minutes for a 450GB drive. Background protection was genuinely undetectable: we could not measure any performance difference between the protected and unprotected state during normal use.
AV-TEST gave ESET a 6/6 performance score — the maximum. For users running older hardware, or for anyone whose current antivirus causes noticeable slowdowns, ESET is one of the two products (alongside Bitdefender and Avira) that will not make that problem worse.
Advanced threat detection: beyond everyday malware
ESET HOME Security Premium includes several detection layers that go beyond standard antivirus protection:
- Advanced Memory Scanner — monitors running processes in memory for malicious behaviour. This catches fileless malware — attacks that run entirely in memory and never write a file to disk, which means they are invisible to signature-based scanners.
- Exploit Blocker — specifically targets the techniques attackers use to exploit vulnerabilities in browsers, PDF readers, and office software. Rather than waiting for a patch, Exploit Blocker detects and blocks the exploitation technique itself.
- Ransomware Shield — monitors applications attempting to encrypt your files. Any program that starts encrypting data without authorisation is immediately blocked.
- ESET LiveGuard Advanced — sends suspicious files to ESET's cloud sandbox for automated analysis. The file runs in an isolated environment, and if it behaves maliciously, detection is added within minutes for all ESET users worldwide.
- Network Attack Protection — analyses incoming network traffic for known attack patterns, including exploit attempts targeting operating system vulnerabilities.
The features in ESET HOME Security Premium
- VPN — included via a partnership, with 500MB per day on the standard plan. Unlimited VPN available as an add-on. Not a dedicated VPN service and not recommended as a NordVPN replacement, but adequate for occasional public Wi-Fi protection.
- Password Manager — stores and syncs passwords across devices. Works in major browsers. Lacks some features of dedicated password managers like 1Password but covers the essentials.
- Secure Data — encrypts sensitive files and folders using AES-256 encryption. Files can only be accessed with your password. Useful for protecting financial documents, contracts, or personal records on shared or portable devices.
- Connected Home Monitor — scans your home Wi-Fi network for connected devices and identifies security vulnerabilities on your router and smart devices. Useful for households with many IoT devices.
- Anti-Theft — available on Windows and Android. If a device is lost or stolen, you can remotely lock it, locate it on a map, take a photo using the front camera, and wipe sensitive data.
- Parental Controls — available as a separate ESET Parental Control app, linked to your subscription. Filters websites by category, sets time limits, and tracks location on Android and iOS.
The interface: powerful but not for everyone
ESET's interface divides opinions. Security professionals love it because it exposes the full depth of the product's capabilities — every setting is accessible, every detection layer is configurable, every log is readable. Users who want to install and forget will find it more complex than Norton or Bitdefender. The main dashboard is clean enough, but the Settings panel rewards exploration and can feel overwhelming on first encounter.
ESET has improved usability significantly in recent versions. The setup wizard is straightforward, the default configuration provides strong protection without any adjustment, and the most common tasks — running a scan, checking threat logs, updating definitions — are accessible in two clicks. Advanced configuration is available for those who want it, not forced on those who do not.
Platform coverage
ESET covers Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux. The Linux support is a genuine differentiator — ESET HOME Security Premium includes a fully-featured Linux desktop client, not just a command-line scanner. For households or small offices with Linux machines alongside Windows computers, this is meaningful. The Mac application is excellent: ESET has invested in its Mac product more than most competitors. The Android app covers antivirus, anti-theft, anti-phishing, and call blocking. iOS support is limited to a VPN and browser safety tool.
Pricing: fair across the board
ESET HOME Security Premium is priced higher than Bitdefender and Norton in year one. The renewal price is close to the introductory price — ESET's renewal gap is among the smallest in the industry. Users who stay with ESET for several years end up paying less cumulatively than users who have to fight Norton's renewal pricing annually. For users who value price predictability and do not want to play the cancel-and-resubscribe game, ESET's pricing model is genuinely more honest.
Who is ESET for — and who is it not for?
ESET is for users who want the best possible detection, are comfortable with a slightly more involved interface, and value a product from an independent European company with no ownership ties to US or Russian corporations. It is particularly right for power users, small business owners protecting their own computers, and anyone who has been compromised before and wants the most rigorous protection available.
It is less right for users who want to install once and never think about it again (Bitdefender's Autopilot is better for that), users who need comprehensive parental controls built in (Norton is easier), or users on very tight budgets (ESET is priced at a premium).
The bottom line
ESET HOME Security Premium is the product security researchers recommend to people who ask what they personally use. The NOD32 engine's track record is unmatched. The performance impact is minimal. The advanced threat detection layers — fileless malware, exploit blocking, network attack protection — go beyond what most consumer antivirus products address. The price is higher than some competitors, but the renewal fairness more than compensates over time. If you want the best protection money can buy and are comfortable with a product that rewards engagement, ESET is the answer.
